Elective Courses

If you will be a new 7th grade student, please visit the Parents section, under Future 7th Grade Students, and fill out the form to request electives for the upcoming school year.

Elective Course Descriptions:

  • Art: Students of all abilities will learn and apply the elements and principles of design by using a variety of media.
  • ASB: Do you have great ideas for activities and events? Enjoy planning and putting on fun activities at lunchtime? Join ASB and you can do all of that and more! Pre-requisite: ASB candidates must qualify for the class. Grade point average, attendance and discipline history are all considered during the application process.
  • Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID): AVID is an academic elective class that is comprised of academic instruction, tutorial support and motivational activities. AVID students learn with college tutors, develop success strategies and visit college campuses. AVID students are required to apply and interview in order to be considered for the class.
  • Journalism: Journalism will introduce you to the world of mass media (print, television, internet) and how the world of media is changing. We will cover an overview of media, the first amendment and how it protects journalists, photojournalism, news writing and gathering, feature, sports, and opinion writing.
  • Spanish: This course introduces the basic skills and vocabulary to converse in the Spanish language and gives students an understanding of Hispanic culture.
  • Technology:Technology is a course that guide students through exploration of many facets of the world of technology, including: Coding, app design, website construction, animation, video production, still image editing (photography), productivity software (Google apps), reflection on the history of technology (and its future), and keyboarding. Students who complete a course in Technology at Pinacate Middle School will be prepared to continue advanced exploration of their technology skills, possibly leading to a career in the fascinating digital world.

  • Beginning Band: Semester course (may be repeated) providing instruction in performance, specific to wind and percussion instruments. This course provides instruction in both concert band and marching band literature and performance. The course will develop the necessary skills to play the student's instrument both as an individual and as part of an ensemble. This course offers continued development of those skills learned in the middle school band and high school band. Performances may include marching band activities such as parades and half-time shows. concerts, and festivals. Participation and attendance is required at all performances.
  • Choir: This course is designed to teach student choral music for mixed (Tre ble and Bass) v oi ce s , singing two-part , three - part , and four-part music. As part of the class, the student will participate in seasonal concerts each semester.
  • RCOE Career Readiness for MS: RCOE Career Readiness for Middle School will provide students with essential skills to make informed and satisfying career decisions. Strategies and skills for occupational and educational exploration, decision-making, and goal-setting are developed. A realistic career action plan is developed using sound guidelines, strategies, and practices for successful career planning within a changing global economy and contemporary workplace. The California Career Technical Education Foundation Standards are thoroughly integrated into the course competencies
  • Digital Skills MS: Digital Skills is specifically designed for curious and creative minds, empowering students to confidently and responsibly navigate the online space. Through mastering digital citizenship, learners will understand how to stay safe online, manage conflicts, and foster positive interactions within the digital community. They will acquire the fundamentals necessary to become self-directed learners, equipped with the skills to independently navigate, assess, and utilize internet resources for lifelong learning. The course covers a variety of digital arts and technologies, including prompt engineering for AI systems, 3D modeling, digital art, game development, video production/editing, and various forms of content creation for the internet.
